WHAT IS HEMOGLOBIN A1C?
Hemoglobin A1C is a test that measures your average blood glucose level over the past 2-3 months. Hemoglobin is the part of a red blood cell that carries oxygen to the cells and sometimes binds to glucose in the bloodstream. This test shows the amount of glucose that sticks to your red blood cells, which shows how much glucose has been in the blood. This test is not used to diagnose diabetes.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
A Hemoglobin A1C shows how well your blood glucose levels have been running over a longer period of time than a single blood glucose reading. Your doctor uses the results of your Hemoglobin A1C test to determine whether or not your diabetes has been well controlled. If your Hemoglobin A1C is too high, your doctor may want to discuss making changes to your diabetes treatment to help you achieve better blood glucose control.
